Kantha Stitching with Michele Elliot
When: Friday 16th August 2019, 1pm – 4pm (3 hours)

Learn Kantha style embroidery to create a simple running stitch to create a beautiful square sample, with textile artist Michele Elliot. A great class for people interested in contemporary embroidery and the meditative craft of slow stitching. Kantha is a traditional type of embroidery native to eastern South Asia, in particular Bangladesh and the neighbouring Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha, along the Bay of Bengal. This technique is used in mending as well as making exquisite quilts. See Michele talking about Kantha stitching and her works in this video:

Your ticket includes a small kit to get started, including needle, embroidery thread, calico and some scraps to applique. You’re welcome to bring along your own fabrics if you like.
YoYo’s a Go Go with Rachaeldaisy

Learn to make Yo-Yos the Rachaedaisy way. From traditional to modern. Yo-Yos, aka Suffolk Puffs or how about some double fun YoYo Puffs! If just the names make you smile imagine a fun morning of hand sewing with Rachaeldaisy where she will share all her tricks and tips for making these wonderful 3D puffs, from traditional styles to the modern versions she uses in her award winning quilts. Yo-Yo’s can be used to create fabulous quilt feasts or used simply as decorative touches to your projects, the sweet cherries on a cake.
Materials List
– Bring fabrics you’d like to make Yo-Yos with. Any colours or patterns. This is a chance to experiment and play.
– Strong thread in a neutral colour. I suggest Aurifil 28 or quilting thread.
– Hand sewing needle to suit your thread.
– Fabric Scissors
– Paper scissors
– 25cm Freezer paper
– Optional – Yo-Yo maker if you have one and would like to learn to use it.
The workshop room will remain available to participants to continue working until 3pm.
Gypsy Carnival with Rachaeldaisy

A fun three dimensional quilt that takes prairie points from the edge of the quilt to centre stage. This is a great chance to show off one of those favourite big feature fabric we all have in our stashes.
The workshop room will remain available to participants to continue working until 15 minutes before closing time at 3pm.

Michele Elliot

Michele Elliot is a visual artist, educator and writer whose practice spans sculpture, installation, textiles and drawing. Her artworks encompass material explorations in relation to body, memory and place. Michele’s survey exhibition some kind of longing: textile works 1995–2018 was shown at Tamworth Regional Gallery in Sept – Oct 2018. Her artworks have been included in Horizon: Exploring the West Coast with The Clipperton Project, 2014; Tamworth Textile Triennial, 2010–12; Kindness: Udartha, New Delhi and Melbourne, 2012. Michele completed a Masters in Fine Arts at Monash University in 2007. She runs textile and drawing workshops in the Illawarra and beyond. Currently she is Artist-in-Residence at Tender Funerals in Port Kembla.

Rachaeldaisy has become synonymous with bold, colourful, eye popping quilts. and it’s no wonder after 20 years of being a florist experimenting and mastering colour and form. Whilst honouring the tradition of quilting she continues to find fresh ways and new techniques to interpret conventional designs. Her use of 3D elements such as folded and gathered fabric techniques, yoyo puffs, prairie points, wool felt, appliqued and piece denim create beautifully unique textured work.
Her fresh interpretation of the art of quilting has seen her quilts awarded many prizes including Best in Show at both the 2015 and 2016 Australian Modern Quilt Show, Best in Show & Best in NSW at the 2016 Sydney Quilt Show. Most Innovative at 2017 Dare to Differ Contemporary Textiles Exhibition, 2017 Best Use of Colour Sydney Quilt Show. In 2018 her work was shown on the catwalks of Paris in collaboration with dynamic duo Romance Was Born. Rachaeldaisy’s quilts have been exhibited in quilt shows and galleries and featured in many publications both nationally and internationally.
